What's Bigger, a Maine Coon or a Savannah Cat?

October 26, 2026 · 5 min read

Tall, long-legged spotted Savannah cat from LVHYBRIDS in Las Vegas

Short answer: a Maine Coon is usually the heavier, longer cat, while a Savannah is usually the taller one. They are big in different ways, so the "bigger" cat depends on whether you mean weight, length, or height.

Height: Savannahs stand taller

Savannahs inherit long legs and a long neck from their serval ancestry. Even later generations often stand noticeably taller at the shoulder than most domestic breeds, which is why they look so large in photos.

Weight and length: Maine Coons are usually heavier

Maine Coons are big-boned with a long body, a thick coat, and a full tail. Adult males are commonly in the mid-to-high teens in pounds and can weigh more. Savannahs are lean and athletic, and later-generation adults often weigh less than a large Maine Coon even when they look taller.

Quick comparison

  • Taller: usually the Savannah.
  • Heavier and longer: usually the Maine Coon.
  • Coat: Savannahs have a short, spotted coat; Maine Coons have long, shaggy fur that adds to their size.
  • Energy: Savannahs are typically far more active and love to climb and jump.

Can you predict how big a Savannah kitten will get?

Not exactly. Generation alone doesn't decide size — an F5 can grow as big as, or bigger than, an F4. Genetics from each parent, sex, and diet all play a part.
