Are Savannah Cats Dangerous? What Owners Should Know

October 26, 2026 · 5 min read

Friendly home-raised Savannah kitten from LVHYBRIDS

A well-bred, well-socialized Savannah cat is not dangerous. Savannahs are domestic cats with serval ancestry, and later generations like SBT Savannahs are known for being loyal, curious, and people-focused. They are, however, larger and much more active than most house cats, so they need the right home.

What Savannah temperament is really like

  • Loyal and often follow their people from room to room.
  • Very playful and intelligent — many learn to fetch and walk on a leash.
  • Confident and curious rather than aggressive.
  • Can be cautious with strangers at first, like many cats.

Why socialization matters most

How a kitten is raised matters more than anything. Kittens handled daily in a home — around everyday noise, people, and other pets — grow into relaxed companions. That's why we raise our kittens in our home with us from day one, never in cages.

Savannahs with kids and other pets

Many Savannahs do well with respectful children, cats, and dogs when introduced slowly. Like any cat, they should be supervised with very young kids, and their high energy can be a lot for a timid household pet.

The real risks are boredom and big jumps

Most problems come from a bored Savannah, not an aggressive one: knocking things off shelves, opening cabinets, or rough play. Tall cat trees, daily play, puzzle feeders, and a secure catio keep them happy and well behaved.
