What to Feed a Savannah Cat: Raw Feeding Without the Guesswork

Savannah cats are obligate carnivores with an athletic build to maintain. We feed prey model raw (PMR) because it produces the muscle tone, coat, and small firm stools we want to see, and because our kittens grow into it from weaning.

Always talk to your veterinarian before changing your cat's diet, especially for a kitten, a senior, or a cat with a medical history.

The ratios that matter

Prey model raw approximates a whole animal rather than a recipe with grains and fillers. The classic starting frame is roughly 80 percent muscle meat, 10 percent edible raw bone, and 10 percent organ — with half of that organ portion being liver.

Our own recipes use a chicken-and-beef base and a rabbit, chicken and beef base, including gizzards and beef kidney. Both are written out with exact weights in our $9 raw food guide.

Transitioning off kibble

• Move to a quality wet food first if your cat is on dry — kibble-addicted cats rarely switch straight to raw.
• Introduce raw at about 10 to 20 percent of the meal and increase over one to two weeks.
• Serve at room temperature; cold food gets refused far more often.
• Feed on a plate or mat, not carpet, and keep meals to 20 to 30 minutes.
• Watch stool quality as your guide — too much bone gets chalky, too little gets loose.

Safety basics

• Buy meat you would eat yourself and keep it cold from store to freezer.
• Never feed cooked bone — only raw, edible bone.
• Sanitize surfaces, bowls, and the grinder after every batch.
• Portion into daily bags and freeze; thaw in the fridge, never on the counter.
