Savannah kittens are a significant purchase, and the breeder matters more than the photos. A reputable breeder can answer every question below without hesitating, and will show you paperwork instead of describing it.
1. Registration and pedigree
Ask for TICA registration for the cattery and the pedigrees for both parents. A pedigree tells you the generation (F4, F5) and whether the cat is SBT — multiple generations of Savannah-to-Savannah breeding with no recent outcrossing. If a breeder cannot produce a pedigree, they cannot prove the generation they are selling you.
2. Health testing on the parents
Genetic screening happens before breeding, not after a kitten gets sick. Our parents are tested for PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) and PK-def (pyruvate kinase deficiency), and we share results on request. Ask which tests were run, on which cat, and by which lab.
3. A written contract and health guarantee
- Genetic health guarantee in writing — ours runs 2 years, plus 1 year of FIP coverage.
- Clear deposit terms. Ours is $1,000, non-refundable but transferable to a future litter.
- Spay/neuter and pet-home terms stated up front.
- What is included at pickup: vet check, FVRCP vaccines, deworming, microchip, carrier, and food.
4. Raised in a home, not a cage
Temperament is built in the first twelve weeks. Ask where kittens sleep, what other animals and people they meet, and whether they are handled daily. Our kittens are raised underfoot with family, other cats, and our small dog, which is why they settle so quickly into new homes.
5. Transparency you can verify
- Live video calls with the actual kitten, not stock photos.
- References from past adopters, or public reviews and social posts you can scroll.
- A real phone number and a real location — we are near Las Vegas, Nevada.
- Honest answers about what a Savannah is not: they are loud, athletic, and demanding of attention.
Red flags
- Deposit requested before any conversation or application.
- Payment only by gift card, crypto, or wire with no invoice.
- F1 kittens offered at bargain prices, or shipping "today" from an unnamed location.
- No contract, no pedigree, no health testing, no vet records.
